Christmas Eve is one of my favorite days of the year. I think it's kind of a bigger deal in my family than it is in most because of the whole Norwegian thing. We eat pinnekjot a traditional Norwegian dish that nobody but the immediate family likes, so we also have ham for all the boys. In Norway Santa comes on Christmas Eve and they open all of their presents so we do a thing where he comes and brings a few presents for the kids to open but also comes later when they are asleep with the rest. Unfortunately, we have kind of a crappy Santa suit that doesn't fit my Dad so Curtis does it. This year I overheard Brianna telling her little sister Sabrina that Santa would probably be really tan. It's a work in progress. The little kids all gather round in awe, but they are also a little afraid. The babies are a lot afraid, actually. We also do a pageant of the story of the baby Jesus with the little kids playing the parts. This year we had two Mary's because Afton and Brielle couldn't agree on who got to do it so they decided to compromise. They both got to play her in different scenes.
Joseph and Mary traveling to Bethlehem.
The angel announcing the birth to the shepherds
The baby Jesus in the manger didn't turn out so well
because all the other babies decided they wanted the
manger for themselves.
The entire cast!
We slept over at Rachael and Nick's new house (I'll get some pictures of it up soon.) and had Christmas morning with them. Rachael had all the presents hidden in their closet so we set them all out after the kids had gone to bed so there would be a huge pile in the morning like Santa had come. Then we got up at about seven thirty cause Nick got to come home a half hour early and opened presents. They have a tradition in Nick's family that they are carrying on, where it starts from the oldest to the youngest but when it is your turn you go to the tree and choose a present for someone else to open. We thought it was a good way to focus on other people while opening presents.

Rachael's House Updates: Not Really
As some of you know, see I'm still pretending there is someone who actually reads our blog, my parents and my sister are both building houses at the same time. Rachael's is going to be all the way done in about two weeks so I thought it was probably high time that I posted these "progress pics" on my blog before the house is totally done and I need to take some finished house pics. My brother in law Nick worked in construction before he was a cop and so he's done most of the work himself as well as adding some cool details which luckily didn't cost anything because he just used the leftover scrap from the framing to frame them in! It really gives the house some class, I think.
My nephew Carson (little Nick)
I just think he's cute
Front of the house
It's crazy how when the outside stuff gets on all of a sudden it looks like a house.

Nick actually built it into the wall along with some decorative arches so all they have to do is have the cabinet guys put the doors on and they have their entertainment center all built in!

The My Sister's are Awesome Post!
Last weekend my sister's did the dirty dash. They originally were just going to do the 5k but Deborah said she got to the mark and thought you know I'm not that tired so they did the whole 10k in style!
This is the before picture
The Dash!
And finally the fruits of their labors!

Idaho Adventures!
We went to Idaho a couple of weeks ago to visit Wil's brother Tyler and his wife Aimee, plus of course Talli and Danny. They showed us a great time! Ryan got some battle wounds on his arm and legs from mountain biking, went on a regular bike ride, and to the beach/river. Danny has gotten huge and I think that Talli is the most polite two year old that I have ever met. They are both adorable and we had tons of fun visiting with Tyler and Aimee!
We forgot our camera so that's just a little taste of our adventures in Idaho!

Policeawesomenessridealong
So Saturday night I did something that I've wanted to do since I was like 8 years old.
I went on a ride-along with my Brother-in-law Nick.
It. Was. Awesome.
We saw some drunk people who were WAY over the .08 legal limit (they both blew about a .21), and a third drunk guy who was passed out on the railroad tracks underneath a highway overpass at the end of a Union Pacific train yard. Nobody has any idea how he got there, except maybe to have driven off the highway overpass and down the 60 or 65 degree embankment to the tracks. I didn't get to see exactly where he was but we drove down a weird access road to try to get there and it was pretty close to where he was and we could almost see him and it was CRAZY! Dispatch had to call Union Pacific and get all the trains stopped and everything. He ended up being a 22 yo. Mexican from really close to my mission (Michoacan, where I served in a city for about 5 mos), and Nick translated for the cops at the station when they were reading rights and asking him about the night and taking the Breathalyzer. It was fun cause I got to listen to him speak and got to kind of relive parts of my mission.
West Valley had a shootout during the night that they borrowed three cops from Murray for. I didn't get to go on that one (which was a bummer cause it would have been like a 100+ mph run down the belt route and arresting a ton of people, but we were at the jail booking a DUI at the time.
I got to see a Salt Lake City drug unit car (it was an unmarked, super undercover, very nice black charger) at the jail. Apparently they refused the inmate because his blood pressure was too high from the drugs he was on.
I also got to hear lots of cool police chatter about the fights and DUIs and everything that were going on.
The coolest thing I got to see were the roadside DUI tests. They were so funny. People were stumbling all over and forgetting instructions and their eyes would NOT follow the stupid pen! They were jumpin all over. One lady was supposed to do the "9-step walk and turn" and she took 11 steps one way and 12 the other and would have kept going probably but she ran into her car. It was great. Both cars, ironically, were brand new, and the owners still had the 30-day tags on.
Anyway, if you want to hear more detailed stories you can ask me next time we talk.

Colorado Trip!
Summer is a great time for us to visit family because we actually have some time and a little extra money to do it with! So on that note we wanted to make sure we visited both of Ryan's brothers this summer and last week we took our first trip of the summer to Colorado to visit Jim and Ang! It was great to see them and the kids, who are as cute as ever. I think Cleo's hair has grown about five inches since I last saw her, it is so pretty. We had tons of fun but pictures speak louder than words so without further ado...
Ryan feeling wide awake after downing his energy drink. We left at three in the morning so that we could make the airshow in Wyoming. Ryan drove while I slept in my little makeshift bed in the back.
He took some pictures of the sunrise.
Me while Ryan was enjoying the sunrise
We went on a river float/rafting trip down the Colorado river with Jim, Ang, and the kids. It was mostly floating but we did catch some fun, level three rapids!
While we were there Ang did a Duathalon which means that you bike, run, then bike again. We were sad cause we didn't quite make it in time to see her cross the finish line, so I made her take a picture afterward. Yay, Ang!
Our adorable nieces on our last morning there Mira and AnnaBelle on top, and Cleo on the bottom.
This was Toliver's favorite thing to do during most of the trip.

My Amazing Husband!
So today I was thinking about what an awesome husband I have and I thought I would post some pictures about all the stuff that he does for me, so he knows how much I love him and so everybody else can be jealous that I got such a stud who also happens to be super hott! So without further ado this is some of the stuff that he does for me.
He cooks me breakfast. He also cooks me dinner and treats.
Some of the treats that he cooks for me. Mmmm peach muffins!
He takes me out on dates at least once a week! We really like to go out to dinner so this is us at Los Hermanos.
He gives awesome back/foot massages. He set this up for Valentines Day after we came home from dinner!
He took me to the home show in Utah County which was so fun! We went to see almost all the houses, and got lots of great ideas. I think this might become a tradition!
This is us at the Cheesecake Factory on our Anniversary. Best Year Ever! I love you babe you are the greatest husband in the world.

Apartment Pics!
Our Doorway: Eventually it will have a stairway going down to it but right now it's just a dirt slide. Also notice how the windows are actually not that far in the ground so even though it's a basement apartment there will be lots of light! The window on the right is our family room area and the window on the left is the kitchen.
Future Kitchen Area:The only way that you can tell this is in fact a kitchen at this point is the pipe sticking out of the ground which is going to be our future sink. The part of the doorway you can see on the left leads to the rest of the basement (storage area etc.) and the doorway on the right is to our second bedroom. Yay!
Bathroom: This is the doorway from the kitchen but we can also get into it from our bedroom. The first part is the sink area. There are going to be two sinks which means lots more counter space than we have now! The toilet shower area is separate from the sink area. At the back you can see the pipe for where the toilet will be.
Our Bedroom: Yay big windows! You can't really get a good idea of size from these pictures but both bedrooms are a pretty decent size. Hopefully people will come visit us once we have an extra bedroom for them.
I couldn't find a good picture of the future living room area so I'll post that later but we are just so excited about our future apartment I thought that I would post a few pics!

Emasculation
My work is having me learn a new language and web platform right now, and the book is really heavy, and my ADD brain has a hard time concentrating on it for long, so I have to take breaks. I thought I would write a blog on one of my breaks.
So I decided to write a post about how much I've started to love cooking. I really like to look at recipes on www.allrecipes.com and search for whatever I'm hungry for and then filter by rating. I then look at others comments and custom-modifications and go to town!
I've found quite a few recipes that I love and a few regular staples that Elizabeth and I eat a lot. I also look for quick recipes (mostly), so that we can eat quickly, and I pride myself on getting something done really quickly!
I should say that I also like quite a few recipes in Mom's cookbook, and we have some of those regularly as well. (Alfredo, Stroganoff [I don't care if it's "real stroganoff" or not], tator-tot casserole [I hope that's in there!!], chicken strips, apple-cinnamon muffins, jellos, etc)
These are the ones I've found and really like:
- Chicken Parmesan (20 minutes)
- Stir Fry (20 minutes, not counting marinade time)
- Fajitas (20 minutes, not counting marinade time)
- Lemon Buttermilk Chicken (my own creation)
- Brown-sugar Peach Muffins
- Orange Muffins
Anyway, so I'd thought I'd ask if anyone has any family favorite meals that they cook often and ask them to post the recipes in the comments, or in a new post on the blog. We would really like some easy good-tasting main dishes to add to it (sides are easy, just some salad and steamed veggies work). Crock pot stuff is good, we don't do much of that. As always, cheap is good too!

Summertime!
So its officially summer as of a couple weeks ago. In fact, the summer solstice has already come and passed, leaving me to feel nostalgic about summer already and wish it could last longer! So, in honor of Summer, and to keep it alive longer, I thought I'd list some of the things I love most about it!
I love having 4 day work weeks! I try to work 4 10's but usually it doesn't work out quite that well, and I end up working like 2 9's 2 8's and a 3. But, I love having those three day weekends for trips, or sleeping in or whatever! No homework also makes it easier to make the most of short nights after a long day
I am so excited to take our summer trips, though we have yet to take one! We're going to Jim's for a 4-day weekend, Tyler's for a 4-day weekend, and Vegas for a 4 day weekend. It should be tons of fun!!
I'm actually most excited to go to Vegas cause it will just be Elizabeth and I and we are going to go see Phantom of the opera, and eat lots of buffets and who knows! I've just always wanted to go to Vegas to be honest. Lots to see, lots of cool things, and I love seeing the country.
We have a pass to Seven Peaks. Enough said.
Uncle Keith recently offered to let us take out his Jet Skis for an afternoon. I am so freakin excited I can't stand it.
Got my first snow cone of the summer today. Tiger's blood with some ice cream in the middle. I need to do this more often, or as a co-worker said "You're going to be sorry you didn't come October."
And there's like a barbecue a week! I'm getting better at flavoring/marinating meat, and we've had some good eats this summer already.
- 4 Day Work Weeks, 3 Day Weekends
- No School
- Summer Trips! Woohoo!!
- Water Parks
- Water Sports
- Cool Mountain Nights
- Snow Cones
- Barbecues

Zumba!
So recently I've been feeling like a little bit of a couch potato, especially without the BYU campus to give me exercise! I know it's pathetic that I counted on walking around campus for my daily exercise but it did involve a lot of walking and I just didn't grow up in an exercising kind of family. You should see my mom try and run! However, we all have recently become a little more health conscious, besides the fact that most of us, me included want to lose about ten pounds. The problem is that I don't really like exercise. I mean, I always feel good afterwards but usually during I hate it, and I have a problem getting the motivation and energy to get off my butt and do it.
What do I like to do you say? Well, it is extremely embarrassing to admit but I really like turning music up really loud and dancing around to it. Am I a dancer? No, actually the end of my dancing career was when I took a jazz class in college and I was so bad at it that literally EVERYONE remembers me. I don't ever remember them because I have blocked out the memory. Needless to say when I dance around the house nobody else is there.
So I have this conundrum. On the one hand I really want to get healthier and lose a little weight, but I also hate exercise so generally when I decide to do it, my resolve doesn't last very long. Except now I have found the answer to my conundrum. Zumba! I must admit I was a little skeptical of it at first. My sister had been begging me to come for at least a month but I was a little skeptical. Then I went and what a surprise! It was the best exercise I have ever done and I can honestly say I loved it! Zumba is basically a bootie shaking dance/exercise. I can shake my bootie and I can kind of keep up with the steps! But I have to say the best part is that it feels like I'm at home dancing around to loud music, but I also get a great workout!

Random Thoughts
Ryan keeps telling me that I should write a blog about the recent books that I've been reading. I think he's just trying to give me ideas or something because he knows that if he doesn't keep nagging me that I will probably forget all about it and not write anything and this is the only thing that he can think of for me to write about so I guess that's what I will write about, although I can't guarantee that I will completely stick to the topic, thus the title random thoughts.
So the most recent books I read were Jane Eyre, City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare, and The Beyonders by Brandon Mull. I've been really lucky in the last week because I was able to actually get some books that I was excited to read by authors that I already had read and knew were good. I have to admit, I always get a lot more excited about authors that I have already read and liked, than with completely foreign authors who I don't know what to expect with and I get really excited about new books. I was especially excited to read the new Cassandra Clare book because I loved the first three books of the Mortal Instruments series, and I have to admit that young adult fiction is probably my favorite genre. Adult fiction can get a little boring and children fiction is fun but sometimes a little too simplistic. Thus it is the perfect happy medium. To be honest I wasn't particularly excited to read Jane Eyre but it is a classic and I have it for free on my kindle, maybe my favorite birthday present ever, so why not?
Sometimes it's better to approach a book with low expectations and have it surprise you rather than high expectations and getting disappointed. Jane Eyre was the first book that I started out of the three and it was also the last that I finished. I think that it was my low expectations that helped me to get through the first part of the book, which was both slow and kind of depressing. It is a classic novel which generally means that it will be a somewhat heavy book and it definitely didn't disappoint in that aspect. I feel totally inadequate to try and critique a classic, without properly analyzing it, as every good English student knows, and I just read it for pleasure so I couldn't really do it justice. I did end up really enjoying it, but it definitely isn't a light reading type of book.
I am lucky to have family who are readers too so that I can get some of the new books I want to read without buying them! Christie and Curtis bought a copy of The Beyonders when it came out and I convinced them to let me read it after Jeffrey using my reputation as a fast reader for leverage. For any of you who have read his Fablehaven series it is a completely different type of story but I think that the general writing style is the same. Beyonders was good at the beginning, drew the reader in but after a certain portion of the book it kind of lost momentum and was a little bit slow until the end where it picked up the pace and had some twists and turns. Part of the reason that I think the middle was less interesting was that it seemed to lose the mystery too early and after you found out what it was it didn't seem to really give a good enough reason for the "hero's journey" that the two main character's embark on. The end introduced some interesting twists however you can't help hoping that there had been more of that something which keeps you wanting to discover throughout the book which seems a somewhat formulaic hero's journey plot. As is typical with a Brandon Mull book the book is entirely plot driven somewhat at the expense of the characters. Personally I tend to prefer female authors because often they seem to be able to really embody and give the readers a real sense of the individuality of the characters, and to form an attachment between the reader and the characters. Authors who do this well, in my opinion include JK Rowling, Suzanne Collins, and Cassandra Clare. For example in the first Hunger Games when Rue dies you really feel Katniss pain and that translates into your own pain for this awful loss of an innocent. By contrast in the Beyonders there is a character at the beginning of the book who reappears near the end that I did not remember who it was, a problem I had with the Fablehaven books as well. Every time a new book came out I often couldn't remember who many of the characters were outside of the main ones. However, as this is something that I have come to expect it didn't bother me too much, but the lack of a real pull to keep reading the book in the middle was a bit of a disappointment. The end was really good though and I would say that overall it was a fun book, and my brother in law loved it and didn't think it was slow at all in the middle so maybe it's just me.
City of Fallen Angels was by far the book that I most looked forward to reading as I have been looking forward to it for months. This is probably part of the reason that I wasn't as happy with it as I thought that I would be. As I said most the time too high expectations sometimes let you down. Overall, I really liked the mystery portion of the book which was very interesting and puzzling throughout and the end had lots of action that kept me glued to the book. The part that was a little bit of a disappointment for me was the relationship of some of the characters that became a little too twilighty, and especially resembled the third twilight book. If you look past and kind of skip over those parts it was a really interesting book yet and I'm looking forward to the next one, especially since it was kind of a cliff hanger, but with slightly lower expectations.

New Blog
This is our new blog! We felt like we were a little behind the times, with some of our favorite friends and family running blogs for months! So, we gave in and made a blog of our own. We don't really know if anyone will be interested in reading it, but we're making one anyway! Plus, who doesn't have a blog? Really...
It is a time of conflicting emotions. Finals are coming, yuck. Tax return came, yay! My sister-in-law just had a new baby, yay! After a year in our apartment, we're kind of sick of it, yuck. 3000 word essay due in two weeks for Anthropology, double yuck. We're going to a movie tonight, yay!
So as you can see, deep thoughts over here. I am actually really excited for this summer to come and for everything to slow down (kind of). I'm planning on reading a lot this summer, to catch up with Elizabeth who would read a book a day if she had the chance. She's looking for new books to read, by the way. Any suggestions?
